Charlotte’s Growth Makes It Third Fastest in the Nation Among Top 25 Largest Cities

It’s not a matter of if Charlotte will grow, it’s a question of how. Charlotte's growth makes it the third-fastest in the nation among the top 25 largest cities. According to the Census Bureau’s most recent estimates, Charlotte’s total population saw one of the largest growth rates in the country. This is among large cities over the past few years with a decade-long growth rate of 59.6%. As of July 2017, Charlotte remained the 17th largest city in the nation with nearly 860,000 people. Only two other Top 25 cities — Seattle and Fort Worth, Tex. — surpassed Charlotte's growth rate, according to the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance. Last year alone, Charlotte's growth welcomed 15,551 new residents. The city is growing faster than Denver (9,844), Washington (9,636), San Francisco (8,260), New York (7,272) and Boston (6,664). The Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan will consider the city’s challenges and opportunities in addressing growth. It is expected to continue over the next two decades. Planning, which kicked off on September 2018, is expected to last until April 2021.

Explore growth scenarios and determine the preferred option to achieve the community vision. Begin to develop a supporting policy.

A draft plan that integrates various department and agency plans, policies, goals to unified plan with supporting policy and implementation strategies and measures to achieve the community vision.

Phase IIII

Revised draft plan incorporating community input. Review + adoption process. Final Charlotte Future 2040 Plan. It is expected that the plan will address multiple aspects of city growth including land use and design, transportation, affordable housing, environmental quality, job creation, and education. Preliminary studies of inequality in Charlotte have examined homeownership patterns. A significant concentration of high homeownership rates is seen south of Uptown — areas such as Myers Park, Dilworth, Barclay Downs. The Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan will evaluate “access to opportunity” (such as high performing schools, job opportunities, and access to transit, fresh foods, and parks) as well as “risk of displacement” (rental and housing prices, educational attainment, and development capacity) to ensure the benefits and burdens of future growth are equitably distributed throughout the community. Participation in the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan is encouraged. Various opportunities for engagement will take place throughout the planning process.
